Nestled in Bhutan’s western highlands, the Gangtey or Phobjikha Valley is a broad glacial valley known for its scenic beauty and biodiversity. Each winter, the endangered black-necked cranes migrate here from Tibet—a deeply symbolic event for locals.

This 9-day journey blends cultural highlights in Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha with a 3.5-day horse-riding adventure across Gangtey’s pristine landscapes, forested trails, and traditional villages. For those short on time yet eager for both nature and culture, it offers a well-paced introduction to Bhutan’s heartland.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Drive to Thimphu (2300m | 55 km)
Scenic flight brings you  into Bhutan with views of the high Himalayas.  After arrival, meet your guide and transfer to Thimphu. Visit the Memorial Chorten and the giant Buddha statue if time allows.
Overnight in Thimphu.

Day 2: Thimphu – Drive to Gangtey (2900m | 125 km)
Drive across Dochula Pass (3100m) with views of Bhutan’s eastern peaks. Continue via Punakha and Wangdue to reach Gangtey.  Upon arrival, visit Gangtey Monastery and take a short ride along the Gangtey Nature Trail to get acquainted with your horse and visit local sights and villages
Overnight in Gangtey.

Day 3: Gangtey Ranch – Ride to Thowala Camp (3750m | 5–6 hrs)
Start with a short riding lesson before riding past Gangtey Monastery and Gayla village. The trail climbs gradually to Lawala Pass through rhododendron forests, then continues via Kumbu Tsamkhang and Gela Pass to a scenic ridge-top campsite.
Overnight in camp.

Day 4: Ride to Lawog Village (3100m | 5–6 hrs)
Descend through forest to Drangphel village. Optional cantering session on open terrain. Ascend to Kulamla Pass (3500m), then descend to Khamdo and Lawog villages.
Overnight in camp.

Day 5: Return to Ranch (6–7 hrs)
Ride through villages and gentle farm tracks, passing Taphu, Zezi, Damchena, and Tabading. Detour on the Tongphu Shing hiking trail before returning to the ranch. Bid farewell to your horse.
Overnight in Gangtey.

Day 6: Gangtey – Punakha (1200m | 75 km)
Visit Gangtey Monastery. Drive to Punakha via Wangdue. Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility) and Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most important fortresses.
Overnight in Punakha.

Day 7: Punakha – Paro (2200m | 120 km)
Drive via Dochula Pass, with a stop at the Royal Botanical Park. Continue to Paro. Visit the National Museum (Ta Dzong) and Rinpung Dzong. Overnight in Paro.

Day 8: Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Hike 2–3 hrs roundtrip to this iconic cliffside monastery. If time permits, visit Drukgyel Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang, or enjoy a traditional hot stone bath at a farmhouse.
Overnight in Paro.

Day 9: Departure
Transfer to the airport for your flight out.

Day Rides in Phobjikha (Gangtey Valley)

Following are two popular day rides on the horseback in Phobjikha (Gangtey Valley)

Riding Option 1 – Nature Trail Ride (Phobjikha Valley)

This scenic valley ride follows the popular Nature Trail, making it perfect for beginners and intermediate riders alike.

Upon arrival at the ranch, you’ll meet your trail guide and receive a safety briefing and basic riding instruction in our outdoor arena. After a short bonding session with your horse, you’ll set out on the trail.

The ride begins from Jangchey village, winding past traditional farmhouses and into a peaceful pine forest. As the valley opens, you’ll find yourself in a wide meadow—the sacred winter roosting ground of the black-necked cranes—with breathtaking views of Phobjikha village and the surrounding hills.

Riding Option 2 – Mountain Trail Ride

Rhododendron Forest & Lawala Mountain Pass (3,000m)

Ideal for more confident riders, this ride takes you through forested slopes and across mountain ridges with panoramic views.

You’ll start at the ranch with a short arena session to meet your horse and go over safety protocols. Then ride up toward the historic Gangtey Monastery, passing through Decheling village and wide potato fields.

The trail winds through a vibrant rhododendron forest, especially beautiful during April and May. The highlight is crossing the scenic Lawala Pass (3,000m) before descending into Kumbu village and circling back to the ranch.
